I just wanted to take this opportunity to personally tell you how great the CCW course was. I referred a friend of mine who failed to qualify at a different course due to poor instruction. I plan to continue using your course to requalify and I recommend it to everybody I know seeking a CCW. Thank you.

Adam S. (Elk Grove)

It was very refreshing to see Pat and Steve raise the bar and set the example of what weapon safety and training should look like. I’ve learned tons from my 16-hour class, and am proud to say these two individuals live up to and merit every ounce of praise they receive. Also, a big thanks and congrats to the SAFTA team for being the tip of the spear!

Brian D. (Sacramento)

I am very grateful for the personal support shown by every member of the SAFTA team. As a military spouse who is very new to the area, I can tell you what a rare experience it is to be so warmly welcomed. About Us

Security & Firearms Training Academy

SAFTA was created by Marine Corps Veterans, retired law enforcement agents, and private security veterans who felt the need to enhance Northern California’s security officer training requirements as well as civilian training in the carrying of concealed firearms.

SAFTA’s current faculty members have worked with the State of California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services for over 70 years, and have been instrumental in writing numerous training manuals which are still in use today.

SAFTA’s promise to its clients is to train each individual with respect and to give special attention to those who require it. Each student is considered special to us and we will always be available to current and former students as a resource, whether the need is for training, information, or professional guidance.

SAFTA was conceived to provide our students with the necessary skill sets, qualifications, and certifications to complete the tasks which they were assigned in civilian defense and protection industry. In doing so, we take pride in knowing that we are helping those who actively make our community a safer place to live.

This course not only covers target shooting, but we also include tactical combat and instinct shooting.

The applicant must also submit a LiveScan fingerprint background check along with the application at an additional cost, which varies based on location the Live Scan is completed.

Note: There will be a savings if you plan to complete the LiveScan for both Guard Card and Firearms at the same time.

The state requires that a student taking this course at SAFTA or any other firearms training facility must present the school with documentation to provide proof of United States citizenship and/or legal residency. This includes one of the following:

    • Birth certificate
    • S. Passport
    • INS alien resident status

  • Guard Card Phase I Phase II Phase III

    Guard Card

This 40 hour course complies with the requirements for training of security officers in California. The combined cost for all three courses totals $300.00 however if completed within one week, the discounted rate is $275.00.

This course includes all the required three levels:

    • Phase one (level I) 8 hours
    • Phase two (level II) 16 hours
    • Phase three (level III) 16 hours

The advantage in taking all three levels in one week besides the financial discount is that guard employers almost always prefer that their guards are fully trained.

The employer who hires a guard with just the phase one (8) hours will be required to make sure that guard takes the next level within 30 days. If the employer forgets to have the guard trained in level II within the 30 day period he/she may be fined up to $5,000.00. The guard in question may also be fined as well as having his/her license suspended.

Working as a guard not in state compliance is a serious situation, which could result in civil and criminal liability for both the guard and his/her employer.

The applicant will be responsible for submitting an application to the BSIS at a cost of $50.00. SAFTA instructors will assist you in this process in class during Phase I.

The applicant must also submit a “Live-Scan” fingerprint background check along with the application, which will cost approximately $50.00 but varies based on the location the scan is completed.
